Large Machinery for a Large Job

08/31/2006 4:27 PM

I am looking for a very large machine (such as a horizontal band saw) capable of cutting metal objects with diameters up to 3m (9.8 ft). Has anyone heard of such a thing? Additionally, I am looking for a very large electropolishing system capable of polishing objects up to 6' X 6' X 6' with a recycling system for acids. Any suggestion for a manufacturer who would be able to fabricate such a thing?

Large polishing machine

There is nothing so difficult to make large polishing machine. However you need lots of funds for it to get it custom designed.

For circuilar cutting, perhaps a robot arm fitted with computer controlled laser will be most suitable then mechanical cutter or gas cutter. Large circuilar surface otherwise will require lots of power in the cutter machine. Point cutter will not require high power.

Your budget should be US$500000 for this project if you are looking for good solution. It also requires more specifications of the metal to be cut, thickness of the metal, definition of the surface finish etc.

There are plenty of large machine designers/builders out there but they are hard to find sometimes. I have found my best luck when looking for a larger than average machine to first solicit the OEM that manufactures the common size machine for what I am looking for. They usually point me in the right direction because most of them know the other players in their field. Another option is IMTS http://www.imts.com/ which is coming up next week in Chicago. This is a pretty good Trade Show that I try to attend at least every 4 years.

Automation

I know a very accomplished Automation firm. ATS Automation Tooling Systems. The company headquarters are in Cambridge Canada, but they have operations just about anywhere in the U.S. and several in Europe and Asia. They can design and build anything that you can think of, and pay for.

Metal? No, But Timber Yes!

N Patterson, This link might be worth a 'gander' http://www.fao.org/newsroom/en/field/2004/35907/in dex.html Quote:- "23 January 2004, Mapajo, Bolivia -- David Cruz delicately guides the roaring bandsaw through the massive tree trunk, carving out a hefty plank. A group of teenage boys stands watching. As Cruz reaches the end of his three-metre run, they step forward to lift the heavy plank and carry it away to a growing stack."

Large Horizontal Band Saws

09/01/2006 11:29 AM

The largest saws I know of are made by Behringer and Amada. Behringer's website lists up to 100" capacity however for the right price I'm sure they would build one to handle 118" as you need.

I'm in the sawmill business and have seen very large band saws at work that might handle what you need called " High strain Bandmills " the blades for metal are interchangeable but depending on what your cutting the other suggestions may be better for the application .I'm currious why you would need to cut metal in a way you have described as it would be more practical to simply order it to size .The stone industry may offer some solutions if your still intent on cutting such large pieces as they have mastered the ability to cut those type of sizes .I hope that information provides some guidance .
