CONVERTING MY CAR TO HYDROGEN!

06/23/2008 1:30 PM

What is the feasiblity of converting a regular automotive internal combustion engine to a hydrogen burning engine.

Then are there ways to low tech, low cost refilling of the hydrogen cells?

This seems to me to be the direction to go in solving our petro situation.
Converting existing autos and there have small privately owned re-filling stations that can take your spent cells and give you another much like getting propane for the gas grille. Could have a patriot in each neighborhood doing the re-filling for a nominal fee, as a community service and bye-bye big oil.

thank you.

The first problem is where do you get hydrogen? I won't get into the economies (or lack thereof) of hydrogen.

The second problem would be that you would need to make some sort of carburetor or injection system to feed the hydrogen fuel into the engine at the right quantity to make the engine run properly. This is easily done in theory since hydrogen is a fuel just like natural gas, gasoline, propane, etc. The peoblem is that no one actually makes a bolt-on conversion kit, which means you will need to create one of your own. This is where the easy part ends. I would imagine you would need to start with a propane system and try to convery that to accept hydrogen rather than propane gas as the fuel.

oh, not again...There's ample discussion of this topic already throughout CR4.

Feasibility is there. The problem is with the computers. You could get the car to run clean but the oxygen sensors keep trying to enrich your mixture because they assume the engine is running too lean. You would need to bypass the sensor and input about .25 volts to fool it into not enriching the mixture. You would need a battery or small power unit to turn the 12 volts into a usable voltage. Then you would need to adjust the overall mixtures coming into the combustion chambers. Next would be delivering the hydrogen to the engine and metering it correctly. Turning off the injectors is another problem. Carburetors would work better but are not easy to find. For the most part it's feasible but you would need a lot of time, understanding and persistence to do it yourself and get it right.

They may have the technology and know how since they build them and would know how to work around the problems. Someday they'll have an efficient and affordable hydro car, but hey, don't let me stop you.

by the time you build it, the H2 frenzy will be over. If you want to burn H2, take you money, put it in a pile, burn it to drive a stirling engine, making electricity that you electricute wate with to get H2. That would be cheapest and easiest. Or go buy one in the open market

I agree. There are many topics about this on CR4, some quite recent. I've learned a great deal about alternative sources to power vehicles. Here's a recent one.

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/23115/Are-Scientists-Doing-All-They-Can-to-Alleviate-the-Fuel-Crisis

The first problem, as stated above, is where are you going to get the hydrogen?

Let's imagine I have my own solar panels. I could use this for the electrolysis of water. So, I could make my own hydrogen. Well, I'm going to have to put more energy in than I'm going to get back out. Energy that could be put to better use at my home. So, why make hydrogen? It would be much more efficient charging the batteries of my electric car.

I think in the future we will all be driving electric cars, for 2 reasons. First, electric cars appear to be very efficient , and second, the infrastructure is already in place. Now all we need is better batteries and lighter cars, so I could drive 500 miles before recharging.

My thoughts are not etched in stone. If I could be shown a better way, they would change.

That said, experiments and research should continue on all fronts.

I think converting a car to hydrogen would be very expensive, on many fronts.

The car I drive runs on hydrogen, using a simple process where the hydrogen is stored in a carbon matrix, giving the advantage of high energy density and easy storage and transport. I really think it is the solution to our energy problems.

Let me know if you are interested and I would be happy to send you information on my system....

That's very cool Steve. But it begs the question: where do you get the hydrogen? Are you an insider for the fuel? I can't even buy it anywhere around here. Making it myself seems expensive and time consuming.

I'm not challenging you here. I'm interested in how you do it. I like to keep an open mind. So, how do you do it?

Too true, I can only really remember those three words in the song so it is extra annoying!! Good answer though.

It's hydrogen chained together with carbon to form a liquid fuel.

I can't imagine what the insurance would be for the privately owned hydrogen station...

Storing hydrogen under pressure or cryogenically is dangerous, much more dangerous than gasoline in a lot of respects and I don't mean to offend those that staff our current gas stations or the average consumer of gasoline, but it would take a lot of convincing for me and my Toyota to grace the general vicinity of one of these stations.

Also, I don't understand how it would be sticking it to big oil, can someone give me the low-down on that?

Oops, seem Shell is one of the major players in hydrogen...

You are exactly right about storing hydrogen under pressure or cryogenically. That is why I am sticking with the process of storing it in hydrocarbon chains in liquid form. Much easier to deal with that way.
