DIY Investment casting?

06/25/2008 7:27 PM

How many of you have done DIY metal casting?

It's one of those things some people want to do and others think that they must be nuts..

One part or several..

tiny to large... I'd be interested to know what any of you have dealt with.

----

die cast metal army figurines and dragons holding crystal orbs aside of course.

You should talk to a jeweler - a real one, not a shopping mall type. This is a standard methodology in their world, and by hitting a few wholesale jeweler supply houses you can get yourself equipped with the rudiments. It depends upon your needs and desires on detailing the cast item. We have had very good results on onsey-twosey items. And great results in replacing broken metal components with identical parts.

I have done some casting...please check out my blog....it shows a step by step series on how to do it.

This was a handle for a bayonette...the pewter was required in order to do a nice nickel plate job. I put a pic of the finished product on the next month's set.

Lete me know what you think.

I have done a lot of casting in; Aluminium, Bronze, Gold and Silver. I have used various methods to do this, the first is casting in sand using a wooden model, the second is vacuum casting and the third is by the centrifugal method.

Search eBay and Amazon-Books. Larger pieces will be poured into the mold smaller pieces may utilize centrifugal casting, etc. Be careful. Molds will come apart unexpectedly, etc.

All good thoughts, and I agree with sand casting for larger items, lost wax for smaller, more details. Do not expect pure replication, there will be hand work required if you need precise detail.
