Wireless Sensor Pros and Cons

09/09/2006 2:35 PM

This article from Control Engineering considers the aspects surrounding wireless sensors, taking in views from a number of sources. It looks at applications, technology, and the type of markets where wireless sensors tend to be employed. One view maintains that wireless technology is now becoming more accepted in mission-critical applications. Besides looking at the unique capabilities of wireless sensing, the report provides a series of commercial links and a "wireless application checklist" of critical installation and operation considerations.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from the September issue of Sensors & Switches, a new newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Sensors & Switches today.

RE: Wireless Sensors

Yes, it is much simple to use wireless sensors in the field areas, emergency handling, and for almost all types of sensing and control environments.

Data on wireless sensor can be made error free using error checking and correction mechanism. High data rate in now possible up to 11Mbps on 2.4GHz and higher bands with FHSS and multiple channel multi-point to multi-point communication.

Spread Spectrum reduces chances of data link failure and reduces RF level in any channel.

Maxim www.maxim-ic.com/ is developing lots of low price 2.4Ghz RF transceiver ICs and some of these can work with small Lithium battery for 10 years. This is something very valuable as one need not worry about power source for sensor.
