DIGITAL ELECTRONIC ENERGY METER

How does digital electronic energy meter works? How does it differs from ordinary meter in accuracy? Is it really tamper proof? I heared insidences of tampering even digital electronic meters,(by magnets!)if so what is the advantage of using these meters in place of ordinary meters?

ADDITIONAL QUESTION:

Can Digital kWh-meter indicate in both directions of current flow, i.e. subtract when emergency(or other local) generator will be synchronized to the grid and send energy back to grid?
