First Electrical System on a USN vessel

06/30/2008 8:34 AM

I missed the date on getting this out since for some reason I cannot access CR4 from home. Anyway, this is just a birthday notification thing for those electrical affectionados of you that like this kind of thing. On 28 June 1879, USS Jeanette became the first US Naval vessel to have electrical lighting installed. I unearthed this little tidbit of info sometime back in the 70s and inscribed it in a little book of useless info I have. No other info was available.

Didn't find a reference to electricity, but did find this: "USS Jeannette (1878), was formerly a Royal Navy gunboat HMS Pandora, launched in 1861, purchased by the US Navy in 1878 for an expedition to the North Pole." During that expedition, it was trapped in pack ice and the hull crushed. Only a few crew members survived a trek to the Siberian Lena River delta. It was a civilian-owned, Navy-operated ship. Interesting! Thanks...

No biggie, that sign is on the outskirts of Hell, Michigan, and it freezes over every winter.

I didn't know that, but I do now and can see how inappropriate my comment was!

Not really, remember, the Jeannette was frozen in Arctic pack ice...
