Skew Control on Wide Rail Yard Machines

07/01/2008 5:55 AM

The current method of indicating skew on one of my yard machines is a very fussy cam limit switch. I am in the process of designing a twin VVVF drive for this machine and am wondering if there are any ideas about skew control. The distance between legs is about 40 meters. I will be having indepent 37KW VVVF drives driving each leg.

Hi need more information on the application, but their are a few instruments available that can be used for this application, mechanical to electronic switchers, both analog and digital. These can be in corporated into the drive systems, with add in cards.

Perhaps an encoder or something similar.

I worked on a crane that ran on rails with a separate DC drive motor for each rail. The motors were connected in series to try to limit skew, but the distance between the rails was not even close to 40 meters.
