Windows XP on PC Locked.

07/02/2008 2:38 AM

Windows XP on my work mate's home PC is locked from the Logon Scrip Window. There is also another window which say ''Avast Antivirus on your computer has been modified, would like to continue" with the Yes/No option. He uses Avast Antivirus on his home PC.

Even swtiching to Safe Mode is locked. Typing his password dosen't work too.

How can the locked condition be removed, reset, or by passed?, and what is the defualt Administrator password for Windows XP?

If you have started Windows XP in safe mode you should have full administrator rights...

If Windows stays 'locked up' even in safe mode then the software is either corrupt or the registration key is invalid...

I had a similar thing happen after I reinstalled XP after a serious crash that was caused by a piece of spyware/adware that made it past the Norton 360. I was able to repair the crash, and the programme that suddenly appeared and caused me grief turned out to be an introductory programme that was left over from the time the computer was new-it was also an antispyware programme.

I initially thought that another instance of spyware/adware had come past the Norton 360 antivirus software again, and was quite angry about it. It took a while to realize that it was resurrected from the time when the PC was new-about two (2) years ago.

I think your friend needs to delete the offending copy of the antivirus programme, and reload it after reloading Windows, as it can be damaged as well. And about the Norton 360-I now realize that it is not what it is promised to be, and after my subscription expires I intend to replace it.

Best Regards,

Ing. Robert Forbus

Your computer is infected.

The virus has been change your log on register. C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe

To repair this problem you need windows xp CD or some utility programs like Hiren's CD.

You can find some information about this problem at:

Had the same thing happen to me about 5 years ago while running Windows 98 and Norton Antivirus. Whatever it was sneaked right past the Norton and then corrupted it.

Remove the date and time battery this will reset all pass words to null.

The battery looks like a large watch battery and maybe soldered in.

Take it out wait a bit, reinstall and you should be fine.

If this don't work, do a clean reinstalling of the OS. You will lose everything and have to reinstall all your programs but if you do backups of your documents you should still have your data. You do - do backups?
