What is the best and most safe method of discharging capacitor banks on a Power factor Correction Unit?

The safest way is to open the circuit breaker on the supply to the capacitor bank open the isolator and lock it out, allow about 10 minutes to dissipate the charge and then close the earth switch to ground the capacitors

Warning! This is assuming that there are bleed resistors fitted (to dissipate the charge). Without them, there'd be a bl**dy great bang when the capacitors were earthed.

Thank you Forbes and JohnDG, your help was great. After which, I did some background reading, and with your good advice, and have safely discharged our capacitor banks for maintenance works.
