Instrumentation and control systems

07/03/2008 6:33 AM

I have completed my ND Instrumentation and control systems. My first job was Lab Technician (Testing technician) for 4 years. Now I want to move to instrumantation which is relavent to my qualification. But I found it hard because I dont have Experince in DCS and SCADA systems of which all campanies are looking for. I have applied several times and invited for interwies but dont get the positions.

I always read problems and solution on this forum trying to familaries my self with Instrumentation and I dont know if this will work.

Can some one please advise what to do to get back to my field (instrumentation)

Thanks

Hi

The good start i could advice would be to look for the Instrument Technician Job in a Plant(Processing, mining ec) where you'll be working with field instrumentation i.e Level,Pressure transmitters etc.By then you'll get the opportunity to slowly shift to PLC(DCS) and SCADA systems. You can also sacrifise your income and go for the Trainee Program on Control Systems especially from System Intergrators.

unless you are looking for maintenance work in a small to medium size plant (less than 2000 I/O points) which requires you to be knowledgeable in both, instrumentation and control systems, otherwise you can find work specialized in either one only.

it takes years to be experienced in instrumentation. the same goes for control systems. if you are interested in getting work within the instrumentation group, and not to be bother with control systems for a few years, may be you should target larger EPC companies and larger size plants. it's true that everything somehow ties back to either DCS or SCADA, but the working knowledge is very minimum and can be easily trained on the job.

Read about industrial networks firstly...

Select one of them to apply.(Modbus, CanOpen Bus, Profibus etc...)

Make your instruments networked. You are find yourself in the SCADA world during this effort.

Good Luck!
