Here's one solution, reinstall Vista. If I remember correctly, SP3 is for XP and not Vista. If any part of the SP3 update managed to get onto your friend's PC, it's probably all messed up by now - Vista also uses a different file system than XP, so it's a good bet that the hard drive is messed up. So, reformat the hard drive and reinstall Vista.

GA for a truly good answer.

Might I also add that the best fix for Vista is to uninstall it completely, store it away somewhere and install XP instead with all its fixes.....

"Give a solution for the problem" ?

Ask and you'll receive... Demand and you can...

Here's some advice: Take it to the shop.

I'm not totally sure, but I don't think Vista will let you install Service Pack 3, since there is no SP3 for Vista yet (SP1 does have some issues with some programs still), it seems like they've tried to install SP3 from some other OS into Vista but I think Vista or the installer wouldn't like that and should have prevented any installation from taking place at all because of the differences. So, this problem maybe from something else.

Ahh! Seems like an HP! YAY!

What?

Didn't make a Recovery CD(or DVD) Set? Oh well; that was the second thing I did on my HP after installing most of the software on it. I actually have a Recovery DVD set, only 2 DVD's. Luckly I haven't needed to use them yet.

Try googling some of the key words. Hopefully you'll find some of what I found...

CHKDSK only checks unless told to.

In the future set windows update to "Express" so you will only get the critical material specific to your OS level.

I hope you're right, but what I'm thinking is that at some point in the upgrade process it hit his hard drive as if it was XP's file format. Unfortunately, Vista uses a different format, which leads me to believe he's scrambled his Hard drive format. GULP!!!

I don't believe that XP SP-3 does anything to the BIOS.

No windows should ever touch the BIOS, some viruses manage to do it, on some mainboards though I am given to understand.....

I've had the experience, those kids couldn't download their music w/o disabling the security system DUH!! You'd think that would be an indicator!

Yes, yes, yes, but this is not a virus. I didn't find any changes to my BIOS after loading SP-3 on two machines.

The real issue here is that XP SP-3 messes with when trying to upgrade your system. It doesn't need to go all the way down to your BIOS to mess with you file system.

Yes I've put XP in the round file, it is a pain in the neck and I do prefer vista because of that.

And you don't find Vista somewhat slow and bloated? Also, what about replacing your software? I know you can create a virtual XP machine using Vista, but I've heard things run rather slowly in these virtual machines.

What's been your experience with this?

I was concerned before actually using the OS but am relieved and all my old software works fine even win'98 & '95 stuff.

Using a 6.8GHz dual core processor not as much swish as a Q6600 but slowly is never heard.
