Are PS3 and Xbox 360 going to have compatability for online gaming?

07/04/2008 11:16 PM

I heard a rumor that the PS3 (Playstation 3) and the Xbox 360 are going to be able to be compatible with eachother online. Meaning that if I had a PS3 and my friend had an xbox 360 we could play with eachother online. Is this true?

No idea.

But it should be simple enough...

Online the two machines are only communicating by sending stings of numbers to eachother. So if they are playing the same game the numbers should mean the same things...it doesn't matter what actually goes on inside the box.

As a simple example imagine a game of chess with the moves coded in a standard way, it wouldn't mater wether the moves were typed in by hand or generated by any games console the information would be the same.

I would think this would be possible, but I don't think it would be as much a game console issue rather a related to the game server and the game itself. Quite a lot of the games are being 'ported' across the different platforms, but I think there is a reasonable amount of re-writing of then code.

Can only wait and see, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Cheers.

Hey all, while we are on the x-box 360 subject does anyone else have problems with these things? My son has one that has died no less than four times since I bought it 2 years ago. Each time it is the same problem and after contacting Microsoft they send us a shipping box, we return it and they send us a new one a couple of weeks later. One thing I have to hand to them though is even though the warranty long ago ran out they still honor this agreement for no charge.

there are a few generations of Xbox360.

The first generation was released to meet deadlines and had several issues. Xbox/Microsoft would rather replace them IF theres a problem and instead of thoroughly debugging it. They extended the warranty of the machines as well. This way they still were competitive.

There are at least 3 or 4 generations of these Xbox360 machines now. My nephew has a gen 2 and his just died last week. (Red ring of death) He (and several of his friends) have also gone through the same thing, the machine fails, you call in, they send a box and they send you a refurbished one or a new one.

I don't know anything about it, but I don't think Sony and Microsoft would really love to do that, I see it as a benefit for the game publishers, not for console manufacturers. Hard to believe that it would happen, but, who knows, we live the days when windows runs on macs and mp3 files are being sold DRM-free.
