Removing akril paint

07/08/2008 3:53 AM

Hi!

I am in a reenactment group and just got my new piece of armour. My problem is that the armourer painted it from the inside with black akril to prevent corrosion. I want to remove it since it is not ideal as scratches start to appear really fast and it does not look good at all, when my armour is on the stand.

What chemical do you suggest? My problem is that I cannot use strong solvents because I do not want to damage the leather strips that are riveted to do armour.

There is an amine-based stripper that is rated as satisfactory for use with enamel-painted polystyrene. It is sold in good model and hobby shops in the UK under the brand name "Modelstrip" (usual disclaimer). Try that on a test piece first?

It might be best not to enter that brand name into a search engine....

Would it be possible to blast the paint off using some of the softer plastic media that were developed to avoid damaging the substrate. Maybe if you have a jobbing paint blasting service locally they could help.

for something as important as that it might be a good idea to try contacting the tech coatings services offices at either ICI on england or more likely the research department at BASF / Dupont in Germany.

good idea not to use a stripper on leather it will harden it like a strip of paper then tear.
