Suitable mining supply

07/08/2008 2:55 PM

Client needs a 1800kW, 6600V motor to be driven from a relocatable generator set.We find it difficult to supply a 6600v genset, but 400V, 2500kVA generator set is available. The motor drives a hydraulic pump and load stays reasonable contant.

Question:

Will this 400v generator suffice if step up transformer gets used?

Transformer config, will Lt/Ht Star/Delta be ok for this application?

Should be OK. Not sure about your transformer config, are you sure it isn't 400V Delta / 6600V Star?

Also make sure that the generator can handle the starting load of the motor under load. Obvious things but they sometimes get missed.

You should be able to get some more information or advise from the gen-set manufacturer (or hire company if you are hiring long-term).

Hello jakbeuk

Yes, go for it.

Your transformer is a normal distribution transformer, with the HT Delta and LT Star.

You are using the transformer in reverse, but that should be fine.

Hope your pump starter is not a DOL one

Where in New Zealand is this pump located?

Kind Regards....

This motor drives a hydraulic pump on one of those big mechanical shovels at an open cast mine in Aussie. My biggest problem I got is dealing with the start up current on the 400v side at start up, which works out to be close to 6400 Amps on 400V for about 20 sec. Any ideas as where we can look for a 6600Volt gererator that can do 200Amp?

Hello jakbeuk

Please advise which State location in Australia:

  1. Western Australia
  2. Queensland
  3. Other - Advise please.

Is this an urgent job? - Advise how urgent.

Are you looking for a:

  • Temporary measure
  • Permanent measure

Do you want:

  • New equipment
  • Used equipment

Presumably you want diesel-powered alternator, if other please advise.

Any other useful information: Please advise.

In the meanwhile, have a look here: http://www.dieselgenerators.com/index.asp

If costs are no problem, please advise, as fastest way of getting it there if it is to be imported, is via charter air-freight.

Kind Regards....

My two cents...

a) What is the running load (kva) of the motor ?

b) Is your generator "Continuous rated"? as your load factor is high?

c) Hope you are using a softstart to start the motor.

Cheers.

You will run the genset with lower cost efficiency.

I think your generator is way too small to start that load with anything other than a VFD. A soft starter will still require a much larger generator. The "rule-of-thumb" for generator sizing is for the genset kVA to be a minimum of 3X the motor kW for DOL starting and about 2X the motor kW if you use a soft starter. So you would need a minimum of a 3600kVA DG with a soft starter, 5.4kVA for DOL starting.

If however this s the only thing on your circuit and a severe drop in voltage and frequency is not a problem, then what you can do is go ahead and use the DG you have but disable the Governor during starting. That way when you start the motor, the voltage will drop and the DG will be allowed to slow down. The lower frequency will drop the current and the engine will essentially bring the motor up to speed as it responds to the voltage drop. But if you have any electronics involved in this machine, they will likely get corrupted by the varying frequency.
