How do I dispose of spent toner

07/10/2008 8:53 AM

I have approximately 10 tons of spent toner to dispose of. The toner is composed of Carbon black, saturated copolyester resin, iron ganules and some fluorpolymer. The main component though is carbon black. I would prefer to give it to someone who can use the material (power plant, ashphalt, recycle) instead of sending it to landfill.

Does anyone know who could use this material?

Any and all ideas are appreciated.

Thanks, did some research on this. The company Waste Watch worked with on their trials apparently no longer exists and they are unaware of anyone else looking at the possibilities.

I was in contact with some power generation folks but ironically, we don't have enough to make it worth their while.

We'll keep digging.

You might want to check for power co-generate-ors as well. If you are in a metopolitan area, and there is/are large manufacturing concerns, these might be likely to have or be planning co-generation facilities. Also you could present your questions to local planning agency which should be able to tell tell you about co-generation license applications/approvals. Any nearby military/naval/or airforce base (still active or converted to local ownership) is another possibility.

Yes, yes. Recycling or reusing it as toner is possible. But so obvious and boring!

Here we are, presented with a fascinating blend of components. Surely we could brainstorm something better?

  • Package it in compacts and start your own luxury designer eye-shadow line.
  • Spread it across the north pole to speed melting. The influx of freshwater into the ocean will help fight global warming. Or hasten it. Either way, it does something!
  • Use it to draw gigantic figures on the ground to make contact with passing space aliens.
  • Compress it into joke hockey pucks. One whack with a stick and POOF! they disintegrate. Hilarous!

See? Pure genius right there. I'm sure others can contribute to the list.

If you are looking for something exciting to do with it, carbon black is also used in fireworks to make those willow tree looking ones with long orange tales, so find a fireworks company to give it to.

Re: How do I dispose of spent toner

There are basically two types of toner around, positive and negative (there are two diffent ways that the print drum is charged/discharged to actually allow printing to take place!). Some printing experts will go even further and possibly remind me of all the subtle differences in either a positive or a negative toner that I have not even mentioned.....

If you are not going to pay to have it disposed of in the correct manner, you will probably need to find out which it is first, or at least separate out all the resin and metal.......

My best bet is to simply get it disposed of in a correct manner, it will save you a lot of aggro in the end.

Type companies use it to make car Tyres black and more UV resistant I believe....if thats any help......

Best of luck.

Andy,

with regards to that unfriendly and bad mouthed guest you recently and fully correctly replied to in this blog, you did not go far enough to my mind my friend, I would have said more. It was both disrespectful and completely wrong.

I also have a question, what is a "Wanker"? I have never heard that word before, sounds quite quaint and very "British". I hope you do not mind me asking!! I hope the answer is allowable on CR$!!

Thanx and keep up the darn Tootin' good work and good answers (in spite of the occasionel Wankers on CR4 from time 2 time!! Whatever that word is. I have an idea what it means, but confirmation would be great the next time you are on line.)

A "Wanker" is an old British name for a person who Masturbates, "pulls his plonker" , plays with the Old Mutton Dagger.

Someone who has to pull his own "wick" because no one else wants to do it for him......

Someone who you could approach with a microphone and a TV Camera and ask:-

"what do you as an outsider think of the human race?"

I suspect you could homogenize it at a moderate content into the fuel oil used for blast furnaces. It should burn off without issue.

Re: How do I dispose of spent toner

07/11/2008 8:20 AM

The problem here is that he's saying "spent" toner. If I read that correctly we are talking about waste toner accumulated from refurbishing used imaging cartridges from printers & copiers.

The problem associated with that is that the xerographic printing process will perform a "sort" function on the toner developed onto the photoreceptor. "Good" toner particles will transfer to the paper and be fused into the image. "Bad" toner particles (too small, poor tribo charging characteristics) will end up still stuck to the photoreceptor (residual image) and cleaned off the photoreceptor into the waste sump. The waste toner will also have some paper fibers and additives along with it.

So the whole mess is not able to be used to refill toner cartridges because it won't print even if you did.

The material could be sent to NuKote or possibly Xerox in the US, or Canon or Fuji Xerox in Japan or China, for recycling. This is an end of the business I was never involved in so I'm not sure what they would do with it.

The stuff could be used as a black pigment additive for a compatible plastic. Do you know what the polymer is or do you have a mixed bag of materials? If it's mixed there is no way to recycle it as new toner at all.

In reality you've pretty much got 10 tons of landfill.

If you want to contact me directly we can talk it over and I might be able to get you some contacts who can help.

That would be ejsasp@rit.edu

Most power generation companies are very keen on finding alternative fuels to burn in their coal-fired plants these days. The reason is there are tax incentives (in the US) for burning alternative fuels. So even if the transportation costs may make it financially impractical, the tax benefits may make it worthwhile for them. Call your local electric utility and ask for the Fuels Department, then ask who is in charge of the alternative fuels program. You may even get paid a few hundred dollars for it.

Oh, and check with a local cement plant. The cement makers also love using alternative fuels in their kilns.

Then, add a drop of hydrogen peroxide and claim tax credits.

It is a nasty business - you don't want to know. A review of thermo or control theory would be much more productive.

Any I've ever had to deal with, the supplier would take it back for recycling. But that was a cartridge or two at a time. 10 TONS? You must be a commercial copy center, like Kinko's or something... It surprises me you don't already have an agreement in place with your supplier for this residue. That would be MY method of choice.

Re: How do I NOT dispose of spent toner

07/11/2008 3:33 PM

Check with your local authority first, as you or landfill operator accepting it could be in trouble if improperly buried or otherwise disposed of.

Judging by the "10 ton" quantity . . . If you have been "doing business" collecting spent toner under the (explicit or implicit) business representation of "safe disposal" or "recycling," then improper disposal could subject you to substantial administrative, civil, and possibly criminal, proceedings, including jail time . . . made worse if you accepted delivery and payment knowing you had no idea how to dispose of the toner.

So your first step would be, (bite the bullet and) keep the toner until you've made certifiable arrangements for its disposal. If the government gives specifications/prohibitions for you to follow, get it in writing . . . or qualify for and obtain the proper license. Otherwise, contract with a properly-licensed contractor to to do the disposal for you.

One more thing . . . posting here on CR4 has created evidence that could be used against you in any impending litigation or action of law. If you were, or are, inclined to think this permanent record on CR4 cannot be subpoenaed in order to identify you, think again.

The toner is a powder and it is an ongoing issue.

Daily volumes are 'low' meaning anywhere from 1 kg to 30 kg.
