Fuse sizes - quick responses appreciated!

07/10/2008 1:55 PM

Hello all,

As an ugly American, I have an urgent question about user-replaceable minature electronic cylinder fuses such as found in smaller consumer electronic devices. In Europe / Asia, what dimensions are commonly available at the local shops these days?

We're finishing up designing a new product for use overseas and we want to make sure that the glass fuse we select can be easily obtained by our customers, should it ever blow. Our first choice (since we have them in stock) is a 6.3 x 30/32.

We've noticed a trend to 5 x 20 (and we might be able to go with that too). Is that a more readily available size "over there"?

A little help would be greatly welcome. We're pushing a tight deadline and this single issue is the last hold up! (we hope!)

Thanks!

Er...I guess I should have said that 6.3 x 30/32 = "3AG".

But you genuises already knew that. Right?

I'll second that for the Spanish too! 5*20mm.

5x20 is standard in cordsets for appliances. I think they would be "laying" around.

3AG & M205 are the common sizes

3AG about 30mm long and M205 about 20mm long.

Here in Australia, you can get both types, and I'm sure that you can find Farnell and RS Components in many other countries too, along with the smaller outlets carrying these size of fuse.

  • RS Components
  • Farnell
  • Maplins

(usual disclaimer). Their catalogues are full of the most wondrous information, and available online.

South Africa uses both sizes but 5 by 20 is more common. Remember the I2t rating for proper protection.

5X20 MM is the international standard for electronics. 1 1/4" X 1/4" (3AG) is really an American(Canadian too, I guess) thing. Hearing that they are readily available in Australia really comes as a surprise to me. So, while you might sind 3AG outside of North America, 5X20 MM is the defacto world wide.

11/4" X 1/4"ø can still be found in the UK occasionally, though it is becoming uncommon, and largely found in heritage equipment. CE-marked equipment uses the 20mm x 5mmø size.

Interesting, I didn't think that you would find them in the UK at all. Just proves that you learn something new every day.

cheers

Before the Blade Fuses, 3AG were the most common in all road cars.

touched just right, the human body touching a live piece of equipment can make a 10A-3AG fuse explode, leaving just the end caps.
