Valve Seats and Reciprocating Engines

07/10/2008 11:29 PM

How dos the intake and exhaust valve of a reciprocating engine turn on every stroke to keep the valve seat free from foreign material and maintain proper seating.

Some cams operate off centre onto the end of the valve stem this would cause rotation. The action of a helical spring will probably also naturally cause rotation as it compresses and returns. A lot of mechanical actions will tend to nutate due to asymmetrical forces. We have a case of this on one product where a pin rotates for no obvious reason, in extreme cases the spring operating on it will cut right through the part.

You should fit a Valve Cap Rotator on each Poppet Valve. These will convert the reciprocating motion of the Valves into roational motion thereby keeping the Valve Seats clean and cool.

You can speak with Harry Hogg, Sales Manager of Helical Technology Ltd. on

44 1253 733122. That Company will design and manufacture a unit to your specification.

Yeh, and assuming there is enough space, and you have the cash to implant such a device into a already working engine, also the structural modifications and the associated cost of modifying the parts.

Also, what happens if the device fails? the valve stays open? or stays closed?
