Miniature Linear Actuator

07/11/2008 6:17 AM

CR4,

Does anyone know where I can find a miniature linear actuator with the following characteristics:

Body type: - cylindrical

Max diameter (most important): - 3mm

Stroke: >8mm

Resolution: <0.5mm

Accuracy: <0.5mm

Force: >2.5N

Velocity: Approx. 5mm/sec

I have have found a lot miniature stepper and servo motors. The closest I found to my specification was a 4mm diameter stepper. However at >€150 each it is too expensive. It seems I would be paying for the resolution and accuracy that I do not require.

Unfortunately I cannot disclose the application yet.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,

J.

Hi,

If a pneumatic solution will work for you might check Clippard Minimatic.

http://www.clippard.com/

(with a handle like Jonny5, my imagination is running WILD with possibilities as to the use of this miniature actuator).

Check out radio control servos. Price is reasonable.

They have the accuracy you need, you just need to send it the right signals, not too difficult.....servo testers are available to do just that for a few bucks....

Did you take a look at the Smoovy?

It is pretty close to your specs.

If I remember well, these used to be in the $125 range in 10 quantity, in year 2001, before being taken over by Faulhaber. They used to be RMB, but when they sold off the motors, they changed to Myonic and still supply cool miniature hardware.

Alternatively you could use a small lead screw such as Kerk with a low cost motor and gear head of your choice.

If you can work to change some specs, these unusual actuators may fit your application:
