In the US licensing is governed by each state, and as a result the requirements change slightly state by state. For example I am licensed in both Texas and Delaware. If I were to do work in say California, I would have to apply for a license there as well and the requirement may be somewhat different than for Texas and Delaware. The good news is the basic requirements (testing and qualifications) are becoming standardized.

Where did you get your education? One issue is that some states require that you graduate from a ABET accredited school. That makes it very difficult for people not educated in the US to be licensed in the US. However depending on the state there may be waivers of that requirement.

I suggest that you start by searching for the PE licensing board of the state you are planning to be licensed in and review their requirements. For instance here are the websites for Texas and Delaware:

Depending on state you apply to, there can also be a requirement to test for understanding of the English lanquage.

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) can also be a resorce to check for application information. http://www.ncees.org/

States vary with requirements, based on local issues. For example, Alaska has cold weather design issues, California and others with seismic concerns.
