Trimble 5700 GPS with Cellular Modem

07/15/2008 5:43 AM

Hi,

I have just purchased a new set of an RTK Trimble 5700 GPS, I have received both receiver (Base and Rover) but I did not receive Radio modem.

Is there any way to use Cellular phone instead of Radio Modem?

if yes then which Brand and Model ? And what is the procedure?

Note:

I have gone through old Trimble online help where I found some old Model cellular phone connectivity with Trimble GPS

I don't believe, that a cell phone can be used at all. I assume that Trimble uses a special proprietry protocol for their radio link. A cell phone is trimmed for usually higher speed than is needed for GPS data and it is based on internet technology and I think that the Trimble GPS doesn't transmit data via internet. I assume that the radio link is to connect the standard GPS receiver with the RTK unit. I don't know exactly how a RTK-GPS works but I would assume that one unit (the one with the GPS antenna) remains at a fixed position during the measurement session while the RTK-unit is moved an delivering the exact x-y-z-data. To replace this radio data connection you might at least need two celluarios, one at the RTK and the other at the GPS unit.

Thanks

one thing is fore sure that Trimble correction data can be transmitted on Internet (with the help of "GPSBase Software"). I was wondering, if I can transmit this data through GSM network (which will eliminate the need of "GPSBase Software" and reduce the cost).

"I don't know exactly how a RTK-GPS"

yes, you are right!

thanks anyway

The datasheet of GPSBase Software says that transmission of correction data is possible with cellphones and internet too. The information given in your initial request was not sufficient to find this information but a simply google search for GPSBase Software reveals all. However, I would prefer any other radio connection than cellular phone for data transmission, especially if you expect high volume and/or large amounts of data. The cellphone is sloooow and expensive - at least in Europe.

The company I usually go through is Keystone Precision Instruments which uses Trimble equipment exclusively. I'm not sure where you are from or who you bought the equipment from but they may be able to help you. I know they put together a lot of seminars and free training.

phone #: 800 833-9250

Hopefully they can help you.

Thanks for suggestions, actually, I am in Pakistan, re-ordering of a radio takes reasonably long time.

I think, I have to wait for the Trimble Radio.

thanks again.
