Tech Valley - Quietly Surprising

05/11/2005 11:49 AM

Science Daily has just reported, Nanotechnology Law & Business recently named the top 10 overlooked and unknown companies 'quietly' making an impact on the nanotechnological world.

Here in 'Tech Valley', otherwise known as the Hudson River Valley in New York State, there has been a push going on to promote an East Coast representative, to the 'Silicon Valley' of California. SEMATECH, a Houston, Texas based company, has located it's R&D division of Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography in Albany, New York (perched on the Hudson)and Starfire Systems located in Malta, N.Y, north of Albany, was "identified (as one of the top) 10 nanotech companies with great potential from some 200 candidates that had not yet received significant attention either from venture capitalists or the media," as stated by NLB magazine.

So I ask everyone out there, is this contrived 'Tech Valley' promotion just a weak try at keeping businesses here in New York or is this thing for real?

Nanotech

The two hubs of nanotech in the USA are old industrial areas that were so devastated they decided they needed to latch on the "next big thing". One is Troy/Albany; the other is Lowell in MA.

A Win for the Home Team

This is encouraging stuff. It's not everyday that you hear about jobs from Houston (e.g., SEMATECH) landing in upstate New York.

Albany was named number 34 out of 150 in Forbe's Best Places For Business And Careers . I guess that means we are doing something right.
