Measuring Magnetic Field Strength - PC Interface

07/16/2008 3:00 PM

I am working with permanent magnets and need to measure magnetic flux field strenth. I'm using a DC Gaussmeter that is somewhat clumsy and I'm unsure whether I'm getting the meter pick-up positioned correctly to measure the full flux field strength. My method so far is to change positions at a fixed distance until a maximum Gauss indication is achieved.

I am looking for (1) an accurate, highly directional Gauss meter pick-up, and; (2) PC based software to replace the hand-held Gauss meter, with interconnection to a Gauss reading pick-up (and the means to record and store readings).

Thoughts???

Ok Please no flames....

This may sound stupid. But if you can set what your trying to do up so what your measuring is pointing up. You could use the old Paper/iron powder trick they showed us all in school.

You could at least see the pattern your getting and how Physically big it is.

Just a thought...Probably a dumb one though.

Not stupid at all - I did that with a piece of glass and iron filings to observe the pattern - but need to be able measure (and record) relative flux field strength at varying distances and angles.

what you did not see is the vortexes on the corners they are hard to measure and are where all the real power in the magnet comes from. the more corners the better the feilds are. as well this is where the high end gause is in the magnet.

this book is worth the read as i found more info in these pages then most other books combined.

Thank you. I downloaded the book and am reading it now. It has already expanded my understanding of magnetic fileds.
