Titanium + Spectra Threads Equal __?___ Material

09/16/2006 12:22 AM

I had seen a TV show about a town that industrial used cloth weaving machines as its primary business. Town was out of business. But a new material is now made there. Using the cloth fabrication-weaving machines. They weave a combination of Sprectra, and Titamiun alloy threads into a cloth. Layers __ thick are placed into molds and these are both heated to high enough tempertures and under ___ pressure. So when they open the molds back up they have a lightweight hard one piece materail known as ___?__
I lost all my notes related to this, and havent been able to find anything doing web searches.

I am interested in all aspects of this material. Any/all information will be greatly apprecaited

Sincerely,

Check out this Nasa Page, regarding the ASM(Advanced Stitching Machine) used to make composite wings from carbon fibers and resin.Very similar process to the one you are referring to, difference being the fabric composition.

http://oea.larc.nasa.gov/PAIS/ASM.html.

Hope this helps, or at least leads you in the right direction

The only Spectra that I know is a herbicide. Is this some type of polymer or thermoset material?

If you find out about this please post here.

Can this also be done with less expensive Stainless Steel threads or other metallic wires to get complex composite forms with higher strength and electrical conductivity in a light weight part? Is this basically substituting metal fibers for glass, nylon, and carbon fibers?

I believe the Spectra he is referring to is a polymer thread, often used in in body armor. Similar but toted as superior to kevlar property wise.
