I have lost my "search" icon on my desktop. The run, help and support, and control panel icons are still there but I have lost the search icon. Can anyone help? Thanks James

2 quick fixes ... http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/download.html free for home use, better (IMHO) than XP search.

Did you uninstall some software lately? Try this to restore it ...

Open a shell (start -> run -> cmd):
regsvr32 /i C:\Windows\Srchasst\srchui.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon
regsvr32 jscript
right-click windows/inf/srchasst.inf > install

Good luck,

Mike

If I understand your problem correctly (and I may not!) let's try this:

  1. Click your Start button.
  2. Once the Start window comes up, put your pointer up in the blue area at the top of the Start window.
  3. RIGHT click. A little "Properties" menu should open. Click on it.
  4. Click on the "Start Menu" tab.
  5. Select the "start menu" button (if it's not already selected) and then click on "Customize".
  6. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
  7. In the "Start Menu items" list, scroll down until you see the box for "Search". If it's not check marked then check mark it!
  8. Click "OK".

Hopefully this helps.

One additional repair or workaround one can use, if your system is using Vista, is to download and use a search gadget. Mine has radio buttons for all the major search engines currently on the net.
