Satellite Internet & TV service in remote location

07/28/2008 3:20 AM

Is possible to have Satellite Internet & TV signal in off-grid remote location 20km from Bairnsdale, Gippsland, Victoria. Australia?

Tradgically, I have asked a number of local & other service providers (service technicians), and each is giving me a different (but non committal) response. I am now fully confused.

Please help (in simple english please).

Thanks Guest.

I had a look at the site, and will contact recommended service providers and see what they can recommend.

G'day Des,

As far as I know it's technically possible and according to the web sites is available at a subsidized price.

However, having said that there are a few problems that come with satellite links.

The big one is the time delay. Communication satellites like this that are in geostationary orbits have to be over the equator and some 36,000 km up. That adds up to at least a 240 ms delay. Now that doesn't sound like much but it can add up very quickly and slow things down to the point they don't' work. That's one of the man reason phone lines use undersea fibre optic cables rather than satellite links.

Now before anybody pipe up and says that Iridium phones don't have that problem, yes the do not. But, Iridium phones work on a system like mobile or cellular phones except the phones are roughly stationary and the numerous low orbit base stations are moving. The orbits are set up so for the areas that are covered there is always one phone above the horizon and capable of communicating with the ground. Since they the Iridium phones are in low orbit they don't have the delay that the geostationary satellites have.

Anyway, I would like to know what happens for my own reference so would you please post what ultimately happens.
