Alchohol, Money and Work

09/18/2006 1:58 PM

The Journal of Labor Research has published a study which claims that drinkers earn more money than non-drinkers, and that men who drink socially bring home an additional seven percent in pay. According to Edward Stringham, a professor of economics and co-author of the study, "Social drinkers are out networking, building relationships, and adding contacts to their BlackBerries that result in bigger paychecks."

I had to reply again, the last line of this article cought my attention... "Perhaps women increase social capital apart from drinking in bars," the researchers said in an effort to explain the gender gap.

This study seems to draw a lot of conclusions based only on a correlation.

Perhaps people who drive themselves hard all day and earn more money that way are more likely to have a couple of drinks in the evening. In that model monetary success and drinking are related by a common factor, but one does not neccesarily cause the other.

Perhaps the people who earn more money are more likely to spend their time at lunch or dinner meetings where drinking is heavily engaged in and encouraged. In that model, success causes drinking, not vice versa.

The fact of the matter is that none of these conclusions can be drawn from the mere fact that people who drink socially earn more money.
