Where is the New Material???

09/18/2006 4:34 PM

Does any body know how I can get information on Carbon Fiber Reinforced Ceramics (CFRC), or Carbon Silicon Carbide (CSiC). I am trying to find out the Mechanical, Electrical, and Thermal properties of this material. If any one knows of a manufacture or anybody that could help me please let me know. They are currently using this material on brake rotors and airplanes.

With regards to the carbon fiber reinforced ceramics, search for CMC's - Ceramic Matrix Composites. You will find plenty of references on the internet.

Try looking into the performance car industry. A lot of high end cars have carbon composite brake rotors already e.g. Porsche, BMW and Ferrari. Also look into some Formula 1 info, and saloon car racing etc.

You can buy carbon rotor upgrades, so you will be able to find links to manufacturers websites from performance car aftermarket sites.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Simon.

Yeah I have tried that. I found a couple more hits when you search for a Ceramic Matrix Composite, but you still cant specifically look up CFRC. Which like the guy above said it is used for brake rotors but it is hard to find an actual manufacture not just a distributer.

Try Starfire Systems in upstate New York. I'm not sure if they have exactly what you're looking for but I know they do some really good work with Carbon/SIC composites. They are making brake components for race cars, airplanes and I believe even the Space Shuttle. The components are very light weight, strong and I suspect expensive but if that is what you need then I think they've go it.
