U.K. Hazchem vehicle signs

07/30/2008 5:04 AM

Does anyone know the regulations that apply to the display of Hazchem signs on vehicles in the U.K?

In my spare time I work with a group who stage public firework displays & have to transport van loads of these fireworks from our base to the display sites. We have been advised that the vehicles should show a '1.4G' hazchem diamond but, because we sometimes have to use hire vans or private cars, these cannot be permanent.

Can we get away with displaying a sign in the windscreen? I usually see similar signs on the back of the vehicles or sometimes on the side but does any regulation specify that the signs must be in a specific position?

Glad to see this is so similar to the U.S. DoT regulations - those I am familiar with, but I doubt the lorries (where did that word come from, BTW?) will be coming here. Anyway, I voted you a GA for the link!

"... lorries (where did that word come from, BTW?)"

Closest I can get is from Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (On Historical Principles):

"[Of north-country origin; the sp. laurie in the minutes of a meeting of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway of 3 Dec. 1834 suggests that the vehicle was called after an inventor named Laurie.]"

The online dictionary gives an alternative,

Origin: 1830–40; akin to dial. lurry to pull, drag, lug

I'll have to look look it up when I get home.
