Movie Projector

07/30/2008 3:25 AM

Does anyone have a recommendation of which Movie Projector to buy for outdoor purpose. I would like to connect it to a HD DVD. Not looking for a TV here. Not sure of what LUMEN, Brightness, contrast ratio, etc. DLP vs. LCD and or 1080i vs 1080p or 720i vs 720p. Hoping for between $500 to $1,000. Thanks in advance

Not sure of which LUMEN rating, Brightness rating, contrast ratio rating, etc. DLP vs. LCD and or 1080i vs 1080p or even 720i vs 720p. Hoping for between $500 to $1,000 US dollars. Thanks in advance again.

Re: Movie Projector - product selection filtering

07/31/2008 4:43 AM

It appears you are wondering just how to how about filtering in the pane at left on the Dell site (?) As to everything except cost (you should start in the $500 - 1000 range and select again from there), it is not clear how anyone could make the sorting choice for you. Take display mode, luminosity, brightness, contrast, and display technology—these will depend on your viewing environment: such things as maximum distance, exterior ambient lighting and lighting variability, glare, and such. Such considerations are probably behind Dell's having partitioned their selections based on user org size. So in this regard your best approach is to survey your viewing area and make a determination of the best and worst viewing conditions your projector will need to accommodate. It is likewise difficult to advise regarding interleaved or progressive scanning, as you have not mentioned what your programming sources will be. It would probably by safe to say that if it will be high def, either broadcast or from recorded media, then go with Hi Def hardware . . . which should also suffice to display standard definition (SD). The same would hold for 1080 vs 720; choose one that will process both...probably most of the HD capables anyway. The downside is that going with widest capability--in order not to be able to "play" from all sources without problems--will likely put you nearer the top of your price range.

Finally, call Dell on the phone and present your problems and uncertainties to them; they are usually very helpful and knowledgeable.

#7 again, with corrections:

It appears you are wondering just how to how go about filtering in the pane at left on the Dell site (?) As to everything except cost price (you should start in the $500 - 1000 range and select again from thereon the next-served page), it is not clear how anyone could make the sorting choice for you. Take display mode, luminosity, brightness, contrast, and display technology—these will depend on your viewing environment: such things as maximum distance, exterior ambient lighting and lighting variability, glare, and such. Such considerations are probably behind Dell's having partitioned their selections based on user org size. So in this regard your best approach is to survey your viewing area and make a determination of the best and worst viewing conditions, and audience size, your projector will need to accommodate. (For example, you might describe lighting as sun-exposed, shaded, well shaded and so forth. You might describe the audience in terms of "theater size," such as petite with less that 50, medium up to maybe 100, large with over 200, or maybe like a large lecture room...things like that.)

It is likewise similarly difficult to advise regarding interleaved or progressive scanning, as you have not mentioned what your programming sources will be. It would probably by safest to say, that if it will (ever) be high def, either broadcast or from recorded media, then go with Hi Def hardware . . . which should also suffice to display standard definition (SD). The same would hold for 1080 vs 720; (although it's doubtful anyone would discriminate a difference (which is saying it usually doesn't matter), choose one that will process both...probably most of the HD capable's will do so anyway. (Maybe Dell put that option there more to get people to click than for any technical reason?) The downside, is that going with widest broadest hardware capability--in order not to be able to "play" deterred unexpectedly from playing from all sources without problems--will likely put you nearer the top of your price range; and you might have to be prepared to go higher. (I would not count on prices coming down in this area; although some special offers might come along if you are subscribed to Dell online in the "buyer size category" that most closely fits your "auditorium" criteria (as previously discussed).

Finally, call Dell on the phone and present your problems and uncertainties to them; they are usually very helpful and knowledgeable.

You are confusing motion pictures in DVD format with motion pictures in film format. The moment you ask for a machine to project films you are asking for a projector that projects movies that are imaged on film, hence the question as to film size, i.e., 35mm or 16mm, or...

Movies on DVD are of course encoded digitally and the type of projector there is different than one for film.

My guess is you want to project DVD encoded motion pictures and you want to do it out doors.

That still leaves a question. How far do you want to project the image and how big a screen do you want to project it on.

As for distance lamp intensity (watts) is the key factor. As for size of screen the issue is which lens. For instance to project on a large screen close up you need a wide angle lens.

All this has to be considered in order to select the proper projector.

You're looking for an LCD projector - check amazon and their ilk for prices. Most sites have an idiots guide (nothing personal) defining specs &c.

I've had success with Panasonic's PT-AX200U. It's an LCD projector with 2000 lumen brightness and a 6000:1 contrast ratio. It's reasonable priced (check for rebates), accepts high def signals, and sets-up rather easily. No ... I don't work for Panasonic and am not a saleman. You can find cheaper (dlp) but research the rainbow effect before you buy. May not even be a problem with the newer units.
