Sizing of bus capacity for parallel generators

Hello fellow E.E.

We have 4 1500KVA power generator at 480V/277, 60Hz, I calculated this @6000KVA dividd by 1.732 x 480V=7,217A x1.25=9021Amps, D I need to derate further by 20% for generator capacity, downstream I used 4 ATS 4 pole @2500A, cummins,closed or open transition for critical load? the system grounding is not continous, I separate the generator grounding and Transformer grounding Y.

The computation for the current should be multiplied again by 1.25. Its too high.

Hi Enbr77,

This is based on NEC requirement in the sizing of cables same thing of the busbars check also practical design by mc partland.

Enbr 77,

The 1.25 safety factor is based on NEC code requirement. Please see also Mc partland pratical electrical design.

Acer,

Each 1500 kVA generator can deliver 1805A. All 4 together give 4 x 1805A = 7220A.

You accounted for an additional 25%, thus 9021A. Why do you want to derate by 20% ?

Hi guest,

We have to consider generator derating factor such as altitude to be installed and the generator room temperature and the bus will be installed in an cummins enclosure.

Derating is based on the generator site altitude and enclosure room temperature.

The bus bar rating in this case depends on number of outgoings and location of the outgoings.

I understand there are 4 outgoings.Each outgoing rating is 2500 Amps.There are 4 incomings each is rated for 1804.25 Amps.

If you arrange all the incoming on one side and all the outgoings on the otherside then bus bar rating should me 10000 amps.

if you arrange the incoming and the outgoing alternatively then bus bar rating can be 5000 amps.

similarly if you arrange all the incoming at the centre and outgoings ( 2 on either side) then also busbar rating can be 5000 amps.

Hi Ramvinod,

I think a electrical interlocked bus tie is possible.However, the connected load downstream are mostly critical linear (computer loads & AC load). I'm designing this to provide flexibility and for future expansion, 5000A for each side would limit my design concept options. By the way, the APSG has a master control located in the synchronizing panel. 10,000A in the bus would give the 4 generators leeway to operate freely, in case of power failure in the power utilities. That's why a design it for 10,000A.

Ramvinod,

My original design is based on your suggested concept, however, since cummins or ASCO can provide up to 10,000-12,000A I decided that it is good for the system considering bus expansion is quiet very hard when all equipment are already installed at site.
