The Many Uses of Vodka

06/17/2005 3:30 PM

A friend of mine received an email touting the many uses of vodka. Some of the suggestions, such as using vodka to clean your eyeglasses, seem reasonable enough. Others, such as using vodka to alleviate jellyfish stings, seem a bit whacky. With the weekend almost upon us, this seems like a good time as any to pose the question: has anyone ever used vodka (or other liquors) for household, mechanical, automotive, or medicinal applications?

Mechanical and medical uses of vodka

06/17/2005 11:46 PM

I have used this and other liquors to clean wounds and sterilize instruments before doing minor surgeries on myself. No joke. But very minor. No appendectomies or anything like that. I had a very deep splinter I had to dig out with an Xacto knife a couple weeks ago. This was no ordinary surface-dwelling piece of wood. This sucker was in deep and it took quite a bit of gouging and cutting. Everything got doused with whatever I was drinking to take the edge away. (I think it was gin.)

I have also used liquors as solvents and cleaners when I didn't feel like running out to the store for a proper product and didn't mind smelling like a distillery. For example, I once used liquor as a solvent when cleaning threads on a screw with a wire brush. It probably wasn't the best thing to use, but it helped.

So the truth is out - I don't keep it around just for medicinal uses, as I might say from time to time.

A special aside for Chris Leonard: please don't revoke my CR4 privileges just because I may not have treated liquor with the proper respect it deserves!

Vodka in Christmas Trees

07/20/2005 2:46 PM

I have been assured by two separate sources that putting vodka in one's Christmas tree water drastically extends the life of the needles. Never tried it, though. My sources may have been questionable, since they also liberally used vodka for thirst quenching.
