The link above has apparently been crushed by traffic. You'll have to wait until another day to learn to talk like a pirate.

Actually, if you think about it Pirates and Engineers DO have a lot in common.

They both take things that belong to others. Pirates call it "Booty", we call it "Reverse Engineering".

Pirates and Engineers are both often the subject of scorn, humor, and caricature, but in reality the power of what we can do scares the beegeezus out of ordinary folk.

Pirates and Engineers both have their own way of talking and vocabulary which is often not understood by those outside our realms.

Pirates and Engineers must keep up with technology to be effective. Modern day pirates no longer use sailing vessels and swords. Up-to-date Engineers no longer use slide rules and drafting boards.

Even "back in the day" a good pirate knew his scimitar from his cutlass and Damascus steel from Toledo or Birmingham steel, just as a good Engineer will know his micrometer from his calipers, and carbon steel from stainless, brass from bronze, and aluminum from zinc.

Neither Pirates nor Engineers, as a group, are very good spellers or grammarians.

There is a distinct stereotype for each: Pirates wear puffy shirts, eye-patches, bandanas on their heads, and a cutlass at their sides. Engineers wear sport shirts with pocket protectors, eye-glasses patched with tape, baseball caps on their heads, and a PDA, calculator, or smart-phone at their side.

Again with the stereotype: Pirates are loud, obnoxious, braggarts. Engineers are talkative, boring, know-it-alls.

Throughout History there have been many famous Pirates. Throughout History there have been many famous Engineers. When was the last time you studied famous historical plumbers, store clerks, or truckers?

If a Pirate gets a license from the Government he is called a Privateer. If an Engineer gets a license from the Government he is called a PE.

Pirates can obtain Letters of Marque, which gives them exclusive rights. Engineers can obtain Patents, which give them exclusive rights.

When a Pirate makes a mistake, he is often hung from the gallows and left "slowly twisting in the wind". When an Engineer makes a mistake he is often hung out to dry and left "slowly twisting in the wind".

I saw an interesting piece that said no one could understand pirates because their language was so full of technical jargon. I know that I'm guilty of that.

A fella is sitting at the bar when a Pirate takes the seat next to him.

No really, it's a Pirate....Tri-Corner hat, Eye Patch, Hook Handed and Peg-Legged.

Unable to contain himself, our friend asks the Pirate if he dressed for a costume party.

"No, I'm a Pirate"

Hmm, after a few moments our friend asks about the Peg-Leg.

The Pirate replys that he was up on the focastle during a severe storm and was washed overboard. "Before My mates could fish me out of the drink, a shark bit me leg clean off. But me mateys fashioned the peg leg for me and it works well."

Our friend then asks about the Hook. "We was taking a schooner one day and I was swashbuckling with a feller. Well, he bested me and cut me hand clean off."

"The hook, she works great" he said lifting his drink to show his skill.

Our friend cannot resist inquiring about the Eye Patch.

"Oh, I don't care to speak of that" the Pirate replied.

After being pestered by our friend to tell the story, the Pirate relented.

He said, he was out on the deck one fine sunny day and took a moment to look into the clear blue sky.

"A seagull flew over me head and pooped in me eye!"

"THAT PUT OUT YOUR EYE?" our friend responded.

"No"..............(wait for it......)

"It was the first day with me Hook!"

Arrrrrr
