The most basic description is:

An exothermic reaction gives off heat (end products are 'hot')

An Endothermic reaction requires heat to progress (end products are 'cold')

Examples that stick out in my mind are:

Exothermic: curing of concrete mixtures (gets warm)

Endothermic: chemical reaction of "Cold Packs" - those little bags that you break and become 'cold' for therapeutics/swelling.

Other than that I am sure Google can provide many more examples

When a chemical reaction takes place it can give out or absorb heat (exotherm / endotherm)

Fire is an exotherm - chemical reaction accompanied by heat & light.

When you put sodium bicarbonate on a fire it absorbs heat as it decomposes this is an endotherm.

Put sugar an a barbecue - fire flares up -exotherm

Put salt on it & this absorbs heat - endotherm.
