Rapid Prototyping

08/06/2008 9:07 AM

While looking thru ACAD tips for something completly different than this subject I came across this.

Have any of you looked into or tried either of these for making your prototypes?

DIY Prototyping Systems
Now we take a break from our usual AutoCAD programming to update you on the latest trend in rapid prototyping: the home prototyping system. The

Fab@Home project aims to encourage innovation by providing instructions on how to build an open-source, low-cost personal prototyping system. Cost of parts for the Model 1 is around $2,400. The system builds models from common household materials, including epoxy, gypsum plaster, silicone rubber caulk, Play-Doh, and cheese. It accepts STL files, but doesn't provide the resolution of commercial rapid prototyping systems.

For those seeking an even lower-cost, lower resolution prototyping system,

Evil Mad Scientist describes a selective hot air sintering and melting system that cost $500 to put together. It fabricates relatively large (maximum print volume is 24" x 13.5" x 9") objects out of granulated sugar. Now we'll really be able to eat our mistakes.

I am looking to build one of the Fab@Home units, but haven't got started yet. I haven't decided if I want to go with the kit, or build my own- they give enough information to get you started. Regarding the resolution, this can be improved with a little design effort. I see it as a good way to get started- my biggest holdup is deciding about software- my current CAD software is ancient (but functional) and does not support the STL format. I also think their material injectors could use a little work- some means of using a adjusting for material viscosity. I am also considering using an old scanner I have laying around to try some UV curing experiments. But, we have to wait a bit for the budget to allow for these experiments. I have seen an even cheaper (and less capable) design at Instructables built from, of all things, Legos...

Ooooooh - and some nice melted cheese, too! I'd want one, but my toaster still works, so $2.4K may be a tough sell to EnviroMrs...

Seriously, I had seen a brief discussion of something like this awhile back, and thought it might be nice to have, but I'd first have to have a need for it.
