Toothpaste and Dental Hygene

09/22/2006 2:01 AM

Living in the far north of Australia I have noticed that most indiginous people and aspecialy the islanders have excellent teeth. (The ones that are not infiltrated by our diet). Most people of western culture that I know have dental decay and I wonder why. Is it only the sugar/acid aspect? Most of us have used tooth paste all their life and still have to spend a lot of $$ on keeping them intact. Have their been studies done on the damaging effects of modern dental hygine. Could it be that tooth paste makes teeth "addicted"? If not used constantly, could tooth paste have a long term damaging effect. Lawers need not reply.

It really comes down to our diet - we eat lots of sugars. From the obvious candy to hamburgers/breads we consumer large quantities of food with sugars in them. Not to mention the amount of cola western society drinks a day it amazing we even have teeth. I don't think there's a toothpaste conspiracy rather an issue of daily diet.

No, I don't believe that the use of toothpaste has a detrimental effect, just the opposite. It is our diet and callous disregard for our teeth that is the problem. Individuals in western societies eat a lot processed food that is loaded with sugars. Many of us skirt the dentist unless there is a problem, don't floss and don't brush at least twice a day with a quality toothpaste.

I don't believe there have been any studies done on "the damaging effects of modern dental hygine" since nearly every study ever done has shown the benefits of dental prophylaxis. Teeth don't get addicted to toothpaste and then fall apart after one stops brushing because they're now weak without it. They get damaged by the sugars, acids, bacteria, plaque and tartar that you are no longer removing with brush, floss and toothpaste.

I vaguely recall hearing that excessively hot and cold foods can cause microscopic cracks in the enamel of teeth, through which bacteria can attack. What is excessive I don't recall. Having ice cream with your hot coffee is probably a bad idea. My children had sealants applied to their teeth by the dentist and grew up cavity free.

I watched a national geographic special about a tribe in Africa… their main diet was potatoes, but doe to large amounts of fluorides in there soil the African tribe all had perfect big bright shiny white teeth. Maybe this could also be a result of local crops…

It's a common misconception that diabetics can't have sugar. Diabetics monitor their blood glucose, but count their carbohydrates.

I was watching a documentary about the astecs. and one the of thescientist said they could determine where a person was raised byanalysing the different layer of minerales absorbe by the teeth thruwater over the years. so our civilisation strip most minerals from ourwater, which was surpose tofortified our teeth, then use a brush toscrape the rest.
P.s> when was the last time you see a dog with braces, yet they still have pearly whites.

when you say "most" are you referring to people across all age groups? In other words are you sure you are making valid comparisons? I couldn't speak to Australia's aboriginals, but there are no shortage of people in Indonesia, P.I,...etc., who are very skilled and produce very fine dentures...as good or better in fit and appearance than those ordered by dentists and produced in factories (labs). So some of those teeth you've admired (in older people) might not be natural teeth. In fact, often the better they look, the less likely they are to be real. Just like a lot of teeth that appear on the big and little screens; things are not always as they seem.
