surplus dlp projector

08/13/2008 12:37 AM

I recently got a couple of gigantic 2002 vintage barco dlp digital cinema projectors. I though they were coming with lamps and lenses but these were left out. After trying to figure them out for a couple of days and realizing that they probably weren't worth investing in a lamp to try to fire them up I decided to cannibalize them for parts. I tore one completely down and I got a lot of nice hardware, a couple of crazy power supplies, 10 or 12 24v fans, a X3 peltier water cooling setup and some cool glass. I feel guilty now about destroying the first one. Any ideas of what to do with the second one?

What's going on with the second one?

BTW, have you electronic basic? if you have, I'm sure you can fix the second one, but if you don't have, bring it to repairman before you destroy the second one too.

Maybe a lower quality lamp will suffice with its own PSU

As your not trying to project to a HUGE acreen, cut a hole in your wall, install the unit in the hole and make your own in-house theater, use the 1st one you pulled apart as a type of instruction manual on how to modify the others you have ;o)

As Snaketails says, you may get away with a lower output lamp. Sounds like you have 24V available so maybe a truck headlight bulb would do?

you can not just change the lamp

it's like trying to put a different ink cartridge in a different printer..

why is the lens gone?.. that's bad

you might be about $800 from having a projector worth about the same.. even if it was $10,000 four years ago.

other than that.. Runco.. great stuff.. generally speaking

"you can not just change the lamp"

You'd have to change the holder & ensure that the filament was at the same focal point but, with a bit of tinkering it should work.
