underground fault detection

08/14/2008 11:03 PM

- What is the best method/instrument for underground fault detection

- is there a good web site explaining the most popular methods

- Is there a set of calculation or rule of thumb to use for the voltage and current magnitude on a thumping method. Let us say the voltage is 15 kv rated on 3 phase 13.8kv system, cable length 5,000m.

- what is the best method to detect the fault on open neutral, and also for low voltage 600, 208, 3 phase underground cable fault

- is there different methods to be used for cables with uninsulated grounding cables

Mk.1 eyeball. Look for a huge crater. The fault is there somewhere.

The best and fast method of locating Under ground cable fault is to trace the fault with the help of a cable fault locater. I am using an APLAB make ( Manufactured by M/S APLAB India Pune) cable fault detector and the instrument pinpoints the fault location. I am fully satisfied with their instruments. Visit the following link to see the various models manufactured by them.

A thumper works best for underground electrical cables. Communications faults can be precisely located with a TDR (time domain reflectometer)
