Soft Neon, 80LED per meter rope lighting

09/23/2006 4:05 PM

Wonder why some brands of the NEW "Soft Rope Lighting" with 80 led per meter has a quality control problem in that the solder, "weld" joints are coming loose even on new material? Could it have something to do with the the new ROHS laws, and the fact that solder WITHOUT lead in it is more brittle and comes loose whereas the old style with lead in the solder in more mallable and holds better with flexing? Just wondering, and I know there are many brilliant engineers on here that would know an answer to this question.

Sincerely, Donald Campbell Campbell Lighting

YOUR SOLDER LACKS SUFFICIENT ELONGATION PROPERTIES .

Bridgit® Nickel-Bearing Solder
Two years in advance of Federal Law 99-339 banning the use of solders containing over .2% lead in potable water systems, J.W. Harris metallurgists conducted research, developed and ultimately patented Bridgit, a non-toxic solder alloy that exceeds the physical advantages of lead-tin solders. The addition of nickel to Bridgit was responsible for a patent being granted. Nickel is used to strengthen and toughen stainless steel, tool steels and various coppers. Nickel is also used to greatly enhance impact strength in silver brazing alloys when joining tungsten carbide cutting tips to tool ends. Nickel is the key element in Bridgit s unique high strength.

Tin/Antimony 95/5
The 95/5 tin/antimonial lead-free solder is useful for applications where moderately elevated temperature is a factor. With a higher electrical conductivity and high fluidity, 95/5 is recommended for lead-free installation of small-diameter, tight-fitting connections. The tin/antimony solders are not recommended for use on brass.

Thanks so much for that insight, hopefully all the makers of the new "soft Neon" products will read this, and order your product! It would be a shame for such an energy saving, and environmentally friendly product, like "soft neon", to fail because of faulty solder joints, when the LED bulbs are rated at 100,000 hours of life.

If your company hasn't found all of those manufacturers, I would be happy to help you advertise to them, as I have been contacted by at least 10 major companies in this business.

My e-mail addy is: lightmeup5@aol.com

Thanks
