Blinking Lights for Toy

08/18/2008 8:37 AM

Have been searching for a ready-made insert for a small toy which measures 2x3x1/4". I just wish to buy several for prototypes. I see these lights in novelty stores but can not find supplier.

The company I had been dealing with, which makes products from design to production, has a China connection. China is insisting on the purchase of about 40,000. Either that or I must put out thousands for a design of this item. Come on. Just for a prototype or two?

The prototype I wish to make will resemble a petri dish with several battery powered led lights inside that blink on motion activation.

What lights?

What colour and blinking speed are you after?

do you need the lights to change blinking speed or to be synchronised with something???

Let's have some information on what you're looking for....

Thanks for your reply.

Am looking for a company that sells a variety of these units to choose from. The frustrating thing about this is that I had found one on my old computer. Bookmark was lost in transition.

Recently bought a translucent frog with red, yellow and blue leds that blink slowly for abt. eight seconds, then quickly for another eight when you slap it. For my purposes, I need a motion-activated mechanism.

The toys, jewelry, rings etc. you see in the stores are sealed around the light units. I am having designer redraw my "toy" so that batteries can be changed.

Appreciate your help, Kelsy

Your actually going to make a toy that you can replace the batteries?

Yes, a toy with changeable batteries. All I want is the blinking light component.

Possibly a little high price than you need...

PDF of the above.

There used to be a LED flasher chip, DIP 8 as I recall (20-25) years ago when I was playing with it)

Go down to a toy/novelty shop and purchase some of those flashing balls that illuminate when it hits the ground

Rip it apart and use the "guts" of the device.

Or at least get a idea on how to build/modify to suit your needs ;o)

Last winter I got some 10 - 12 LED strings of battery-powered Christmas lights that can blink or stay on, come in white or 4-colors, for cheap at a Walgreen's drugstore. Maybe something like that could be adapted for your prototype?

http://www.digikey.com/

They have websites in USA, Canada, UK and Germany that you can order on-line from and avoid costly shipping. If you find the LED's you like in their catalog, call the manufacturer directly and if you talk nicely to them, they will usually send 3-4 for prototype purposes.

Hey Kelsy,

I realize you are looking for a ready-made insert, but have you considered building your own circuit? What you are looking for shouldn't be terribly complicated, would be a fun project and you would learn a lot that might apply to your toy making.

Check this website for circuits. Look at schematics and maybe the hobby corner.
