How is a Bucket Elevator Used?

08/18/2008 6:43 PM

Can you point me to a video or article showing the correct and efficient operation of a bucket elevator?

I have read a lot on design of conveyors, but very little on operation, installation and the connection to other equipment.

My basic doubt is if a bucket elevator is fed by a chute going into the boot hopper or if it is fed by filling the boot's pit with grain (or other bulk solid). In that case I would have to clean manually the elevator before doing any other operation with it. I have seen both ways of doing it. Which is better?

What I want to do is to use the same elevator to accomplish different tasks at the plant. For that I would have to give it a capacity several times greater than the capacity given by a continuous flow, and build intermediate hoppers to store the grain while the elevator is doing something else. I don't know if this approach to the design of a grain facility is fine.

If feeding a boot with chutes is the right thing, may I also converge flows (lines) to the boot using a diverter valve? Is it the same any of the two boot's hoppers or have I got to make some capacity corrections?

What you are proposing is very common and as long as sufficient time is given to empty the system and minute cross contamination is acceptable, the single elevator solution will work very well.

The chute that feeds a bucket elevator is designed to drop the material directly into the passing bucket. The buckets are basically back to back so there is always a bucket at the chute. There is some spillage into the boot that is picked up by the next bucket as it goes around the tail pulley. The feed chute is always above the centerline of the tail wheel to accomplish this. If you can tolerate almost no cross product contamination, the boot end (as well as the buckets) will need cleaned out at changeover.

If you feed into the boot end the buckets have to dig thru the material which puts unwanted loads on the bucket to belt bolts (or bucket to chain bolts). It also decreases the capacity in many cases because these digging loads are added to the true lifting loads. In a belt elevator, raising these loads could make the belt slip on the head (drive) pulley.

Placing a diverter with different sources prior to the elevator is common. Obviously the diverter feeds the elevator chute and not the boot directly.
