Insulation Testing Voltage

08/20/2008 1:15 AM

Dear Sir,

When we do the insulation testing of electrical installations, how should we decide the insulation testing voltage?

For example

What could be the insulation testing voltage for 1 phase 230 V AC wiring and 3 phase 400 A AC?

There are a couple of schools of thought on that that I am aware of. I usually test to approximately double the working voltage. so if you are testing 230V, use the 500V scale, 460V, use the 1000V scale.

Someone correct me if i am wrong but as far as i can remember there is no relationship between testing a three phase and single phase installation as the voltage should be twice the phase to ground voltage i.e for 230v PH to GRN it is 500V .

That may be correct however, I prefer to test double the phase to phase. Of course this is also dependent upon the wire's rated voltage. If the wire isn't rated for the voltage you want to test at it will probably fail it anyways.

Most electrical codes/standards require a dielectric strength test between conductors and ground of 1000 volts plus twice the rated. So, for a 230 vac circuit one would use 1460 volts for 1 minute.
