Top 10 Scientists Killed or Injured by Their Experiments

08/20/2008 11:36 AM

I'm sure many more scientists have either been killed or injured conducting experiments or as a result of experiments.

[10] Karl Scheele - Died from tasting his discoveries

[9] Jean-Francois De Rozier - First victim of an air crash

[8] Sir David Brewster - Nearly blinded

[7] Elizabeth Ascheim - Killed by X-Rays

[6] Alexander Bogdanov - Killed himself with blood

[5] Robert Bunsen - Blinded himself in one eye

[4] Sir Humphrey Davy - A catalog of disasters

[3] Michael Faraday - Suffered chronic poisoning

[2] Marie Curie - Died of radiation exposure

[1] Galileo Galilei - Blinded himself

Don't forget Boltzmann. He got so depressed over the fact that nobody in North America believed thermodynamics that he killed himself.

They also listed Louis Slotin, who died from radiation poisoning while "tickling the dragon's tail"!

No list would be complete without that name, IMHO.

The list doesn't include Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who was injured in accidents while digging the Thames Tunnel. He never fully recovered and died from a stroke at age 53.

Karl Scheele - brilliant Scientist alas lacking in common sense I fear!!

Although he was probably not to know at the time that Cyanide and Mercury were bad for you (its from people like him that WE now know they are bad for us) I think a certain amount of hesitation in rushing to taste things should have been employed!

Reminds me of my dog. If he sniffs something he likes he'll suck/chew on it for a bit. If he likes it he'll swallow if he is unsure he'll spit it out.

All I really need to know, I learned from my cat (NOT Del BTW...). In this case, "sniff it first" applies.

A friend at uni had a book called "PHIHKAL - A Chemical Love Story", which is an acroymn for Phenyl Halides I Have Know And Loved. (Sorry if this is inaccurate, it is was 2nd hand info 10 years ago....).

It was about a chemist in the 60s/70s who looked at the known stimulants / narcotics, and went about formulating other potential combinations. The book describes each experiment, the tests he did on himself, and the result.... including one which said something along the lines of "I measured 4mg instead of 4ug, this is it, I am going to die..."

Not being into stimulants myself (stick to the beer and rum), I didn't read the book, but it sounded like a crazy job.

Darwin awards, but more fun!
