Honda CA 160 question to Stilljester

08/23/2008 9:56 PM

Stilljester,

Your informative restoration blog inspired me to pull my old CA160 from the back of the garage and try to get it back in shape. I don't have the technical skills you do but I've slowly begun taking the big pieces off for repainting. I don't have much rust. I have the fuel tank off but the petcock assembly has corroded. The bottom half disintegrated when I put a wrench on the nut. I pulled the bottom half away and found three corroded screws leading up into the petcock toward the tank itself. They wouldn't budge and I drilled them out but still no way to move the remaining part. How is the petcock attached to the tank and what is the best way to get it loose?

Secondly, what was the best source for parts for your project?

I've got several more questions but don't want to swamp you.

thanks,

wilhelm45

Hi,

I've honestly found eBay to be a great source for parts. Normally I contact sellers and ask if they have parts I might need but they currently do not have listed.

If memory serves me right the petcock is only held by those three screws. Try soaking it with little PBblaster & it should come right off.

Best of luck with your project.

Stilljester,

Thanks, I soaked it for a couple of days with PB Blaster but couldn't get the screws to budge. Last night I drilled out the scew heads but still can't seem to make it move. I'm worried about damaging the underside of the tank. Do the three screws go through the underside of the tank or do they fasten to a plate that is connected to the tank. It looks like there a gasket between the tank and the petcock. How does it fit onto the tank, with screw threads around the exterior of the petcock, with only the three screws holding it fast to the tank or some other way? I have the Clymer's manual for the Honda 125-200cc Twins 1965-1978 but it doesn't offer any suggestions.

Many thanks,

Honda still stock the tank as a new unit, at 1965 prices too. You just have to order it in from a dealer. Same goes for the exhaust pipes which tend to rust from the inside out!

Yes, there is a gasket between the tank and gasket. This link will show you how the whole petcock is assembled.

Otherwise, once you've removed or drilled the heads off those three screws it should come right off. Given the rust it might take some persuasion.

I don't know much about the model vehicle you have, but I'm assuming it's a motorcycle. If so, and it is similar to a 1965 CB160, then you may be able to go on an online site, such as, bikebandit.com, and look up the gas tank assembly drawing to interpret the petcock assembly.

Petcock sounds really weird. I know it means a petrol tap, but petting cocks is not really for CR4, don't you agree?
