Plating Nickel on Chrome

08/24/2008 9:20 AM

The instructions from Caswell Plating are limited as to bath temperatures--they give current density as 1amp per 15sq.in. when plating nickel to copper amp 1amp per 1sq.in. when plating chrome, but nothing about plating the nickel on chrome--I'm wondering if anyone would care to suggest bath temperatures and/or their experience with nickel on chrome

Application is to copper and semiconductor material with purpose of minimizing resistence

The temp to plate nickle would be to high for chrome that why they don't do it.

Normal progression is copper, nickle, chrome. I've never heard of putting any plating over chrome. I suspect that if you did, you would have adhesion problems.

Well, after chatting with Caswell Tech support, they tell me the bath temps are the same for their N15C Electrolitic Nickel and their DC15 Electrolitic Chrome @ 110F, but they aren't confident about adhesion either--I belive Chrome is a substitute for iron, since the people here do not want to make their own iron-plate solution, and no one seems to have any off-the-shelf...

Any suggestions for that?

Henley's 20th Century Formulas, Processes, and Trade Secrets, a facinating book printed in the 40's (IIRC), includes a section on eloctroplating. I'll check it tonight and let you know if it has anything on plating iron.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to electroplate Nickel onto Chromium (no such thing as "Chrome"). Please tell us the need and the application.

Are you from somewhere other than America? Here, chrome is the usual term for chromium when being informal.

Further discussion with Caswell confirmed basic opinion expressed here What are you THINKING!?!

Actually, we are now considering Tin on Nickel
