Over drying plant and instrument air?

08/24/2008 10:59 PM

As a process engineer working with utilities, I am always looking in optimization.

The facility I work in utilizes 4 desiccant dryers with varying product air temp dew points ranging from -110 to -70 degrees F.

I would like to establish "common practice" for a maximum tolerable air temperature dew point so that regeneration cycles can be based on dryer performance and not necessarily time. Where I work, the lowest recordable ambient temperature was -8 degrees F.

Thank you much!

A global photographic materials manufacturer operated at -40degC dewpoint at its UK factory.

ok, so go back and calculate the dew point of compressed air. If you dry your air to -10 dew point at the meter, you will make water in your headed as sone as the outside temp gets to 35 F and it'll freeze at 32 F. The hygrometers are not set to measure water content under pressure.

The estimated dew point temp you need is about -50F, so the added security of -100F is worth it. One frozen line would cost you your job, is it worth saving $1000/year versus shutting down a unit?
