Gearbox Issues

08/25/2008 2:55 AM

Dear All,

I already presume the answer will be no, as I have googled this completely! Is there such a thing as a gearbox database, much like the bearing databases we use in condition monitoring? It seems wierd why there is not a facility where we can enter data such as, number of teeth, possible bearings, gear mesh frequencies etc etc. If there was a facility where we could enter these following our investigation then others could potentially use these and save time, likewise we could possibly find one we need for a future job.

The information is not readily supplied by the manufacturers or by the builders of the overall plant. It is soul destroying counting teeth, looking for bearing numbers that are usually almost invisible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Maybe we could start a share programme, if the facility does not exist.

Best Regards

The answer is no... many gearboxes are engineered specifically for an application, and for those that are mass produced, the manufacturers are not too interested in condition monitoring so they won't make your job easier...

The next best thing is to use the database utility in your condition monitoring system to store this information for your plant, so if you ever move on someone else won't have to recreate it.

Sorry... gearboxes are just not a standard as bearings are...

Thanks Steve S,

You have confirmed my fears and you are correct in saying the mass production manufacturers like to push their condition monitoring service, that is the response I keep getting from them.

Hi Scot,

The gearboxes needs a very diferent lubricants (form ATF's to the API GL-5 gear oils). Some OEM's have (e. g. ZF: http://www.zf.com/content/de/import/zf_konzern/startseite/service/technische_informationen_2/TechnischeInformationen.html) an approval list, which contents namely the approved gear oils for all gearbox types.

best regards:

Béla

sorry it took so long to find this, but they sent out a package of different gear setups and ratios, calculations and anything else you would need with a gear, worm, belt system
