Heat Exchanger Plugging

Hi, can i ask how many percentage of tubes can be plugged or what is that limit numbers of tubes that can be plug in a U heat exchanger... And also what code or reference standard can i find this.. thx

If there are N tubes, the maximum number that can be plugged is N-1.

The performance of the exchanger will be affected starting with the 1st tube plug.

Yes, you are in right. Theoretically the maximum number that can be plugged is N-1. But for sure practically is impossible to operate an exchanger plugged N-1 tubes.

Hello

From our practice and internal regulations are allowed to be plugged 15% from total tubes. For additional details see API 660. Hope tis help.

You don't say what is causing the plug. If the tube is plugged because the water freezes, the answer is one tube. A frozen tube will burst and your start to leak your refrigerant with your water...
