PC TV converter

08/27/2008 7:02 AM

Hi,

I bought a VGA to Scart converter for my computer, so I could hook it up to my telly, as opposed to having a monitor. Upon arrival, I plugged it all in, to find that the telly,(which I know works) just made a funny buzzing sound, and the screen just had flickers of light which showed. I know the computer's screen port works, because I plugged it into a PC monitor(Not Mine) a few days prior. Tried on two tellys(One Grundig and one Goodmans) and neither worked. What should I do. The Cable is:

15pin VGA SVGA to 3RCA AV Audio Video M/M Cable Adapter

please help

Be sure your video refresh rate is set to 50 Hz (60 Hz US).

You should be using the RGB input or Component input on your TV. (unless it actually has a VGA connector.)

It sounds like the cables at your TV are mixed up. You are connected to the wrong connections on your TV. You have a video cable connected to the audio input and and vice versa. The sync for the picture is on the Green.

The VGA cables are going through a RCA converter:

which is plugged into the scart

Check in the menu on your TV to make sure you have the right input selected....video1...video2...etc.

Good luck

Only 1 scart on the telly, which is on AV. But, its through a scart splitter (which works and was on the right channel) which is also plugged into a games console.

Yep probably something wrong with the 15pin VGA SVGA to 3RCA AV Audio Video M/M Cable Adapter connection, check the pin diagram from the computerside with the cable adapter and measure if the signal arrives correctly.

Some cheap VGA to SCART adapters do no signal conversion other than the Sync signals. For these to work, the TV SCART input should be set to use RGB instead of the standard composite or S-Video signals. Not all TVs can do this.

The computer output usually has to be set to a compatible resolution and scan rate. For PAL TVs this is usually 800 x 600 at 50Hz scan rate although most TVs will accept 60Hz as well.

Down conversion from higher resolutions to standard definition TV is difficult as detail is normally lost and cheap converters usually significantly degrade the image. Cheap converters cost around 35 to 40 UK pounds. Good converters have edge detection algorithms to preserve fine lines in the down converted signal. Good converters cost hundreds of pounds.

If your TV is High Definition then a cheap DVI to HDMI converter will give good results.

Hi Bondy,

Make sure the TV and PC are plug into the same receptacle outlet. If they are on different circuits you could have a ground isssue. When there is a differential voltage between ground points there will be current flow which results in interference. I would check this first.

What resolution your PC was set to? Normal TV only got 480 lines. If your PC is set to higher resolution, it won't work on the TV. It would be easier to get video card with RCA video out. Or TV with RGB input.

Oh is the converter output correct format? PAL, NTSC?

Its got Blue Green and Red VGA inputs, but onto the red yellow and white terminals.

NTSC to PAL. But I was advised:

red to red, green to white, blue to yellow.

And did as it said.

How do you check the PC resoloution?

From the picture, your scart converter converts composite video, s-video and sound to a scart connection. From your description, you are trying to hook up component video to composite video. This will not work. You need an additional converter or different converter to obtain the composite/s-video signal. You are hooking your red color signal to your right stereo audio channel. You are hooking your green color signal to your left audio channel. No wonder your sound is complaining! Your composite-in on your scart is only getting your blue chroma signal, no red, no yellow and no sync. No picture!

Bondy is in the UK so the set will be PAL which is a 625 line standard (although not all are viewable). 800 x 600 is the best match to a PAL set.

HOW DO YOU DECIDE THIS?

I MEAN,IN 800*600 WHICH IS HORIZANTAL AND WHICH IS VERTICAL?

Re: PC TV converter

800 is width

600 is height

the higher value is usually the width of the monitor

or did you turn your monitor 90% to use in oortrait mode?

Re: PC TV converter

Are you sure your telly has the right inputs for what you are trying to feed it? You would need a scan converter to supply component video (yellow, white, red). Composite is Reg, Green, Blue (what you need to use to make the telly usable as a computer monitor). The VGA port has nothing to do with sound. Sound has to be ported over seperately. Are you sure you have a converter and not just an adapter cable. The adapter cable would only port over the RGB signals and not the Sync. You need an actual convert box to provide the sync. If you are trying to use an adapter cable:

"you need a graphics card that is capable of outputting the right signals (PAL interlaced @15hz?), and not many can. To output the right signal, you also need to install and configure the "powerstrip" software.

In addition, graphics cards will not output the right signal during bios loading/startup, and these signals may even damage a regular PAL TV, and so be warned. Hence, you shouldn't connect up a TV until you are sure that Windows has loaded, and the PC is outputting the right PAL interlaced signal, which is tricky to do without monitor (some people use VNC to remote control the PC into the right state).

I believe there is a modded radeon card that outputs the right PAL signals, even during startup, but I'm not sure of the make. Anyway, some more googling may turn up more information."

(The above quote was found here: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136811&page=1&pp=15)

The part about damaging a regular PAL TV is what caught my eye. Be careful.

Would it be easier to just go out and buy a monitor?

In my opinion (and opinions are just like under arms. Everyone has a couple and some of them stink) it would be easier and cheaper to use a computer monitor than a "Telly" for your purpose. You can get other gadgets that will allow you to watch TV on your computer monitor if you are trying to get by with only one display.
