The Siemens S5 CPU 943B PLC program was not installed by the Manufacturer itself. It was installed by the technical Engineers of the Supplying company (Mollers-Germany) about 15 years ago. The PLC has not encountered any problem up until the recent. Thank you.

Hi,

The S5 can be a tough PLC. There really isn't enough details provided, what type of network, do you have Step 5 software and have you looked at the processor status registers?

Has anything been done?

I am guessing by network you may be referring to a second I/O rack? These tend to be configured in an eeprom that sits in the comms modules.

I would seek help from a SI/programmer/engineer with Siemens S5 experience.

Regards,

Trevor.

you are welcome..... yes i know what is the problem, plz tell me the staus of Stop, run, BF indications (green and red status) on the CPU itslef. Moreover, is the running program made in DOS, Ladder logic, or FBD. Try to retreive the backup from the PLC without removing the memory card. Kindly give me a call at my number +966 568365637, so as we can discuss it completely and i can advise u a clear point what to do.

awaiting your call.

Dear Sir,

I have been working on Siemens S5 and S7 systems for past 3.5 years. Kindly let me know your location, so that i can help your friend. Kindly make sure that no one touch the S5 CPU of the PLC and avoid any power loss of PLC at the top most pirority. If you can ask your friend to contact me at my personal number +966 568365637. I can help him on the phone or atleast advise him what to do.

Thanks and Regards

Hubertooru, Could you clarify the following:-

1. Was the system running and now suddenly stopped working.

2. Was there a change made in the days/ week before this happenned.

3. Has the PLC gone into Stop mode.

The reason I ask is that if the system was running and has suddenly stopped working then there is a high probability that this is an external hardware issue and nothing to do with the software directly (OK bad programming may make the problem alot worse).

If a change was made then it is likely that this change has caused this issue. If this is the case then your best bet would be to contact the person that made the change - you probably will have already done this if this was the case.

If the PLC has gone into Stop mode then you may have a faulty I/O module or a faulty power supply. You can view the stack and see what is causing the system to go into Stop mode - of course you need the software and have some experience but it is possible.

If possible you should upload the PLC code (including data blocks etc) from the PLC and store this somewhere safe - it is always a good idea to have a valid version of the software somewhere safe.

Removing the power from the PLC will not cause any problem if :-

1. You have a battery for backup purposes.

2. You have the code on EEPROM.

If you have neither of these then do not remove the power and in fact this maybe what has caused your problem - if so then, to put it mildy, you are screwed. From reading the information given it would appear as this has not happened as you say that the code can be PLC code can be accessed.

If you have an EEPROM module and no battery backup then if power was removed then the PLC program that was in the RAM would be lost and the PLC program on the EEPROM would be loaded and this may not infact be the latest PLC program so this may be what has happened - I have see alot of changes made but the EEPROM never updated. If this is what has happenned then, without knowing the changes made, you are slightly screwed, but not as screwed as in the case of loosing the complete program - always try to look on the bright side .

If you could give a brief history of the system (how long it was running, battery backup or not, EEPROM or not, were there recent changes made etc) then you will find assistance here I am sure.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Mr. W.A. Snow

HI

The first thing to do is contact the company who made the machine as these will have a copy of the program this can then be sent over night. If you have a lap top with the s5 software on and a person who can use it the manufacturer will be able to mail it to you and you can then load it direct.

The down side to this is if you have made any upgrades in house to the program the original will not have these. But you should have a copy in the files of the person who made the upgrade.

This is the quickest way I can think of getting you up and running

Hope it helps

BY RULE OF THUMB, I SUGGEST YOU REMOVE THE BACKUP BATTERY FOR 60 SEC.

CHECK BAT. VOLTS.....MUST BE 3.0-3.6V......IF LOWER REPLACE

always replace bat and then turn plc power on !!

Thank you All for your assistance in sharing your opinions. It helped alot.

On my friends case, yes there is a labtop which contain an original backup. However, 5 years ago, when a PLC expert was onsite, the Siemens S5 was slightly upgrades. The original copy was not updated. Therefore, when he had the problem and tried using charging the original in, there was a mismatch.

Anyways, as you've advised, he'd followed instructions from the Palletizing Machine supplier technicians and Also Siemens technical personal.

So Mauch thanks to you Ladies & Gentlemen.

Regards,

Hubert
