09/05/2008 4:55 AM

I have laptop fujitsu Simens with Win XP in german. I tried to switch to the English Win XP version, but I got the message "Unable to detect hard disc. No hard disc", when I insert Win XP installation CD in English version. In fact hard disc exist in German version of Win XP. Can somebody advice me what to do?

Hello bashkimi

The language installed by the original Operating System sets the standard for the computer.

The English and any other language versions of WinXP are treated as different Operating Systems, because all the Codewriting is related to the installed language.

When an Operating System is installed, all the Drivers for the Hardware are written in that installed language.

However, there is a way around the problem: The Dual Boot.

You need to create a Partition on the Hard Drive, and format it, then instal the second language of WinXP to that new partition.

Refer: http://lifehacker.com/software/top/windows-vista-beta-how-to-dual-boot-windows-xp-and-windows-vista-179906.php

With the above, replace where it says "Vista" with your other language version of WinXP.

You will need to install drivers for that second language, otherwise, that second language XP will not be able to "recognize" the Hardware: Monitor/CPU/RAM/Cards/Printer/Keyboard/etc.

Read the above webpages for an understanding of the Dual Boot system.

The method is "clunky", and to change from one language to the other, the Computer must be re-booted each time, as the computer re-starts, you should get the option of selecting which Operating System you want.

Advise your progress, or otherwise, with

Kind Regards....

As far as I remember from reading various MS manuals, XP-Pro should be able to switch languages while XP-Home language is fixed at installation. I have not personally tried the XP-Pro language option.

Be aware that many Siemens programs will only work with the correct Codepage running, Win XP can handle any language if the English version is installed, but many of the international versions are not quite as supportive. ensure that you do your partitioning with software like partition magic, it will work well, and follow the previous writers instructions for Dual boot.
